Sava TIES

SavaTIES

Sava TIES is a regionally significant project that is implemented in all four countries of the Sava River basin: Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia. The project is part of the Interreg Danube Transnational Programme (INTERRG DTP) and funded by European Union fund (ERDF, IPA). The project started on 1st June 2018, the Sava River Day and has a duration of three years. Besides strengthening the SavaParks network it focuses on invasive alien species in the Sava River Basin. The main goals are to:
  • find an effective solution for permanent eradication of IAS
  • reduce habitat fragmentation
  • improve the connectivity of the transnational ecological corridor.
The emphasis is on cross-sectoral cooperation, as we can only achieve the desired results through cooperation of different stakeholders, national/local governments and local inhabitants. As part of the project, different methods of effectively removing or eradication of IAS plants which are already causing serious damage in the Sava River basin will be tested. This will be the first ever attempt to tackle this demanding issue on a transnational corridor level in the region, with lessons learned bringing benefits to the wider Danube region and beyond.

Invasive alien species (IAS) are plants, animals and other organisms that are non-native to an ecosystem and are primarily introduced by humans. IAS plants are spreading uncontrolled in the Sava River basin, having a negative effect one other native species, reducing soil fertility and cultivable agricultural surfaces, causing major problems in flood control and much more. To conclude – they change important European natural habitats, destroy the corridor connectivity and are very difficult to manage. This is not only a problem for nature protection; they also have a negative effect on human health and cause major economic losses.

Invasive alien species are the main challenge of biodiversity conservation in the 21st century. They are also our main challenge! Follow us on our official website and on social networks. Visit beautiful Sava River; take photos, publish them… and don't forget to use #SavaTIES!

Key findings and summaries of two studies for the revitalization of the Sava River and its floodplain have been presented to important stakeholders from 19 to 22 September. As a part of the Sava Parks II - Freedom for Sava project, together with important stakeholders, the project team visited representative project areas and discussed the proposed solutions for revitalization. The journey started in Austria with a visit to already restored parts of the Drava river. The experiences gathered helped to better understand the challenges and opportunities ahead of us.

The SavaParks network received an EU grant for its new project. „The value of Sava TIES project is EUR 1,604,137! In the next three years this new and innovative project will be implemented in the four countries through which the Sava River runs. The goal of the Sava TIES project is to find an effective solution for permanent eradication of invasive alien species, which represent not only an environmental problem, but have a negative impact on health (e.g. ambrosia induced allergies) and economy“– it was stated at the project kick-off event held in Novi Sad, Serbia from 1 to 4 October 2018.
